Alessandro Giannì

“Although Alessandro Giannì’s paintings (Rome, 1989) often take their subject from the internet or from new media, the final result is extremely painterly and manages to become almost entirely independent of its initial cue. The paintings are rendered with aggressive colour fields and bold colour combinations. The images are violently deformed into results close to expressionism, and in his scenes something magical and hard to decipher always happens.”
In his work he collects aesthetic fragments from the web with the intention of giving them a new existence. In his works the analogue practice of painting merges with the use of new media, the Internet and digital culture, investigating the connections between the digital universe, parallel universes and the dreamlike, introspective world of human beings.
He attended the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome and since 2013 has exhibited in galleries and public institutions in Italy and abroad, including the Gardens of the Casinò di Venezia (on the occasion of the 73rd Venice International Film Festival), the American University Katzen Arts Center in Washington DC and Kühlhaus Berlin in Germany. Together with the leading figures of “post-internet” art, he took part in the major exhibition ÑEWPRESSIONISM, curated by the Greek artist Miltos Manetas. In 2020 he was among the founders of Spaziomensa, an artist-run space dedicated to promoting Rome’s artistic ferment.
