“The works of Cosimo Casoni (Florence, 1990) belong to a strand that goes back to the Dada and conceptually eclectic painting of the last century. Here the painting is both an autopsy table for the act of painting and a playground in which to experiment and indulge one’s own pleasure. Cosimo populates his surfaces with a multitude of elements of different kinds: finely executed figurative passages are brutally juxtaposed with tags stolen from the urban context, and graphics mingle with the most violent marks of painting, such as scratches and scrapings, thus creating true autonomous painterly landscapes.”

— Antonio Grulli, Salon Palermo

Cosimo Casoni seeks formal solutions that subject the depiction of objects and of natural and urban elements to processes of perspectival redefinition. He does so through a visual grammar that favours the painterly stroke, above all in oil, but also watercolour and drawing, by way of collage and video: media that the artist experiments with constantly, leaving them open to a glimmer of mutual hybridisation, in a continuous oscillation between figuration and abstraction.

Landscapes and still lifes combine with monochrome surfaces and graphic signs; suspended, quiet images are suddenly disturbed and interrupted by rapid gestures. Objects undergo an organic synthesis that emphasises the sculptural dimension of some of their parts; touches of colour appear as unstable structures, forms in progress, not entirely delineated, that turn the space of the canvas into a place of mental reflection. Elements drawn from traditional painting, graffiti and even skateboarding come together to create surreal contrasts aimed at evoking personal interpretations and meanings. Everything overlaps in a play of visual weights and chromatic balances that never exhausts itself in a purely formal exercise.
